What is Halloween?

Whats Halloween? Im sure thats a question some of ye will hear from your little ones, and often we are stumped on things we should know but have long forgot. So Mama Babe is here to help

  • Halloween is a pagan festival origination from around 100 AD, called Samhain which means ‘end of summer’ . Dead Spirits are said to enter the mortal world on the eve of summer or Oiche Samhna.  Traditionally bonfires were lit to ward away these spirits.

Why do we use pumkins at Halloween?

  • The original tradition of Jack o Lanterns and pumkins at Halloween orginated in Ireland but the Turnip was used instead. It is believed the Pumkin tradition was the evolution of this Irish tradition brought to the USA by Irish emigrants. The Jack O Lantern was believed to be made by a blacksmith that crossed the devil and was denied access to heaven and he was given the Jack o Lantern to light his way as we wanted the earth forever.
